Potkook is a private sanctuary dedicated to preserving the region’s indigenous flora, with our commitment centred on maintaining the fynbos ecosystem. Since we acquired Potkook in 2020 we have cut down more than 80 alien trees on the farm. This has had remarkable benefits on the re-establishment of Fynbos in the affected areas. Especially Protea acaulos (Ground protea), which started growing again in the area next to the Eco Pool where about 40 pine trees were felled.
Fynbos management consistently entails the assessment of fire hazards on the farm, necessitating a controlled burn of the area to the right, extending beyond the Buchu garden. This controlled burn primarily targeted the mature Protea laurifolia. We left the burnt bushes in situ for about two years and then cut up the trunks for firewood, mulched the branches and used them as soil cover in our garden. A few mature stands not affected by the controlled burn were also left on the site to serve as a habitat for our birds. This area has also had remarkable regrowth of Dilatris Ixioidis with their magnificent mauve flowers, restio’s, leucadendron, and Watsonias. Apart from the Buchu garden, Agathosma betulina also grows wild on the farm and is usually found close to the Waboom (Wagon tree) or Protea nitida.
